A Thousand Times Stronger
The Story:
Based on a best selling novel in Sweden, this Swedish language feature explores how traditional school divisions of "popular girls, "cool kids," and "quiet types," can be exploded by the actions of someone who does not accept the rules. The narrator is Signe, a smart fifteen year old girl, who although quiet often questions her school and its cliques. Her life, and those of all the other girls in her class, change radically when a new girl, Saga, enters their scene. The film shows what could actually happen if girls became "A Thousand Times Stronger."
Questions:
* Does your school have cliques like Signe and Saga's school?
* What are the groups? Do they sit together in the cafeteria? Hang out after school?
* Do you wish the cliques would break up or change? Or do you enjoy these divisions?
* Do you think boys talk more than girls in class? Get more attention from teachers?
* What would happen if a girl like Saga came to your school?
* What did you think of the ending? Why do you think it ended like that?
Ideal Age: 10 & Up: This a powerful female empowerment story which raises many issues about the way girls treat each other, boys treat girls, and how girls can feel silenced in school. Younger kids might appreciate watching it with a grown up or older sibling so they can talk about the issues raised in the film.
